The First Sergeant was the highest-ranking enlisted soldier in the infantry company — the “Top,” the “First Shirt,” the NCO who stood at the right hand of the company commander and served as the voice, the conscience, and the backbone of the enlisted force. In the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment — the “Golden Dragons” of the 4th Infantry Division — the Company 1SG was a seasoned combat veteran who had risen through every enlisted rank to reach the pinnacle of company-level NCO leadership. Operating in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam, in the brutal terrain of Pleiku and Kontum provinces, the First Sergeant of 1/14 Infantry was responsible for the discipline, welfare, training, and combat readiness of every enlisted soldier in the company. While the CO commanded, the 1SG led — walking the perimeter at night, checking on his soldiers, solving problems before they became crises, and ensuring that the company’s NCO corps was performing at the standard the mission demanded. The First Sergeant was the soldier every young PVT looked up to and every young NCO aspired to become — the living embodiment of the Army’s NCO creed, tested and proven in the most demanding combat environment of a generation. In the Golden Dragons, the 1SG was the heart of the company.
